II RESEARCH WORKING STAGE WITH THE RAILWAY INSTITUTE ON THE USE OF STABILTRAK RESINS

2018-07-12

In 2017, we established cooperation with the Railway Institute in the field of chemical stabilization of rail bedding using STABILTRAK polyurethane resins. The flammability and water permeability tests carried out so far have produced positive results.

In order to conduct further research at the turn of the second and third quarter of 2018, three polygons were prepared on the experimental track in Żmigród. The first of them was located on a curve with a radius of R = 900 m in section No. 15, where 4,818 – 4,588 km were used to build new PS-83 concrete sleepers with SB-4 fastening and to cleanse and supplement crushed stone. After conquering the track and its stabilization, the DGS machine, the slope of the ballast on the outside of the arch (from the footway to the rail foot with the exception of sleepers) was covered with a resin with two different expenses (comparative tests) over a length of approx. 130 m (220 sleepers). The other two polygons were arranged for the so-called “Wild passages” (ie in the places of unauthorized and uncontrolled pedestrian crossing through the tracks), previously profiling the damaged ballast in their area (and on one of them additionally with a tuft), and then covering the bedding with the resin on one side of both passages so that comparative observations were possible.

After obtaining adequate strength through the resin layer will be carried out, among others examination of densification of bedding slopes, attempts to blur, and in the case of “wild passages” – also observation of how the solution affects the behavior of pedestrians moving there.

In the near future, it is planned to start testing STABILTRAK resins under operating conditions on properly selected sections of the Polish railway network.
